We tried our hand at geocaching. I had heard of it but never looked into it...an outdoor treasure hunt type of game that uses GPS coordinates to help you locate "caches" all over the place. Caches are supposed to typically have a log book to sign (like at the top of a 14er) and a few small trinkets that you can trade out. Sounds super fun, right?! Well, I must not be quite as smart as your average bear, because it was a total fail for us.
After getting the kids all excited, and them grabbing a few trinkets we could trade out, we set out with four caches in mind, all within about a mile of our house. The first one took us almost 45 minutes to find, and it was just a signature log, tiny, squeezed between some rocks. After all that work, the kids were a little miffed that there were no treasures to trade. Second attempt we looked and looked, but never found. We took a break to eat lunch and let the girls nap, then went back out. Third attempt we found with a clue from a walker passing by. When we broke it open, the kids were - again - disappointed, because the trinkets were a dirty ribbon, a dirty button, and a dirty old game die. No one wanted to trade, except Rachel, who took the dirty button because it was pink. Doh. Fourth attempt we specifically chose a cache that was labeled "easy," and claimed to be large and full of lots of trinkets specifically for families with kids. Score, right?! Could not find it, even though we searched for half an hour. By then, everyone was cold and hungry so we went home. So, pretty much the kids hate geocaching. I feel like we should try again once or twice before we write the whole thing off, but maybe it needs to get warmer first, and I need to get better at spotting hidden things. :)
We went to the Science and Nature Museum one more time, since our membership expires this week and we will not be renewing that one. Fun, as always, more so because our friends the Jensens were with us. I didn't realize, but on the same street as the Museum is one of the new Trader Joe stores that are so popular, so of course when we were done at the Museum we had to stop by there and elbow our way through the crowds to buy some cookie butter (and other things, too). It is a pretty fun little store, and the kids loved all the treats that we bought.
Finally, we took a long overdue day-trip down to Colorado Springs, about an hour south. There is so much to do there! We had a great time touring the Olympic Training Center, although the girls wanted to know why the swimmers were all in their teeny underwear, and Caleb was horrified that the male gymnasts were not wearing shirts. So we had to talk about uniforms and athletes and training and how it was all going to be OK. haha. We also finally got to see the Garden of the Gods, these beautiful rock formations tucked away behind town. It was a fantastic day!
