We were in Grand Junction for the Christmas holiday when the first few started feeling bad, then drove home through Utah to visit Grandma and Grandpa Mitchell and Great-Grandma and Papa Mitchell. McKinley barfed on her bed in the nighttime, so we cut out visit short and made it the rest of the way home, but not without sharing our germs first - all the grandmas and grandpas got sick too! Sorry about that.
Once home, we tried to relax and recuperate, but still needed some days off of work and school (who decide that Christmas break should only be 7 days anyway? I'm shaking my fist at you, Lincoln County School District #2, and whichever people approved this calendar.)
One night, as we thought half of the kids were well enough to return to school the next day, Caleb was kind enough to show us white spots on his tonsils. OH GREAT. Infection. So instead, they all stayed home and we visited the doctor all together to see if we had strep in addition to our flu symptoms.
Diagnosis: Tonsil stones. "Soft aggregates of bacterial and cellular debris that form in the crevices of the tonsils." EW. Brush those teeth, boy!! But at least it wasn't strep, YAY!
By the end of another week everyone was grudgingly back on their feet and attending school and work. Whew!
Until...McKinley started moaning and crying at bedtime every night because her butthole was itchy. Yep, the joys of motherhood! We tried whatever remedies we could google at home so we could get some rest, but none were super effective. I google-diagnosed her with pinworms, an apparently common parasite in kids (and adults). EW again; also, we live in the middle of nowhere and couldn't just run to the store and get pinworm medicine at Walgreens 24 hour store. I finally did make it down to Afton where (thank goodness) the grocery store pharmacy carried some, and we were able to conquer the itchy butt bedtimes.
The real question is...what adventure will we get to tackle next? :)
Everyone was feeling well on Saturday so we took advantage of the snowy winter weather and found a good sledding hill right here in Alpine. My favorite type of activity: free, close, outdoors, and everyone had a good time! Win-win-win-win! Plus, it gave us a chance to enjoy some nice hot cocoa when we were done and frozen, so add another win to the list.
And when McKinley got thirsty, so devised a plan, although she wasn't super happy about it:
Eat snow.
